About Elouise (The Great X1/9 Restoration)
More About Fiats
The accompanying picture shows two of the best Fiats yet seen, the X1/9 and the Cinquecento Sporting, both future classics. The X1/9 is a mid engined two seater with a removable 'targa' roof and was designed in 1972 by Nuccio Bertone. The Sporting is a more modern design, this time by Giugiaro. It differs from the standard Cinquecento in having an 1100cc engine shoehorned into the engine bay, together with the five speed gearbox from the larger Punto. It handles like a go-kart!

My interest in Small Fiats began with the Fiat 500 which I owned back in 1992 for a year or two. It was chronic to drive, leaked through its canvas roof in the rain, rarely ran without a hitch and even had a small electrical fire one day, but had something that I couldn't put my finger on, 'character' I suppose. I always regretted selling it, but have been hooked ever since.
